Your computer has a unique identification number called an Internet Protocol (IP) address when it's connected to the internet. Usage Data

Usage Data includes information about how you interact with the web pages and websites on the Platforms. This is collected using cookies or similar technologies placed by us and others. Cookies are small pieces of data sent from a website and stored in a web browser, and they may assign an anonymous identifier to the user. Usage Data includes:

Usage Data

We use your User Information to communicate with you about the Platforms, including contacting you about your contributions, managing newsletter distributions, directly marketing products to you, and notifying you of administrative matters like changes to this privacy policy or alterations to the Terms of Use. If you are a registered user, we also publish your User Information (excluding your email address) on your profile on the Platforms. Other users may contact you through a "contact user" link on your profile, but your email address remains hidden when the link is activated and a communication window opens.

We use Usage Data to understand how people use our platforms. Web analytics services on the Platforms allow us to measure, collect, analyze, and report on Usage Data to understand and improve users' experiences on the platforms. We also use this information to focus our marketing efforts and develop the Platforms. Location information in the Usage Data helps us tailor your experience on the Platforms by displaying different content based on your location, such as local advertising offers and content in your local language. We also use Usage Data for remarketing (sometimes called retargeting) to better target ads to users. Retargeting uses cookies to identify users who visit a website with a particular brand of goods or services, and then targets advertisements of that brand to the user on other websites.

Usage Data is also collected directly or disclosed to certain other providers during a session on any Platform. These other providers use the data for a range of purposes, including to distribute direct marketing materials from Osteosynthesis.org, connect to social networks (such as via links to Twitter, Facebook, Google+, and other platforms on the Platforms), and pay commission to our affiliates.

Target advertising

We share User Information with third parties when you have agreed to receive direct marketing materials and, if you are a registered user, with other users of the Platforms through your user profile.

We may also disclose personal information to third parties for the following purposes:

  • Targeting advertising: We use a third party to provide monetization technologies for our site.
  • Distributing direct marketing materials from Osteosynthesis.org using third party providers
  • Collecting information needed to pay commission to our affiliates
  • Connecting your account to third party payment providers

There may also be times when we are legally required to share personal data, such as with regulators, law enforcement agencies, government agencies, courts, or other third parties when we believe it is necessary to comply with applicable laws and regulations or to exercise our legal rights.

Information Transferred or Stored Overseas

We may share your User Information and Usage Data with third parties located overseas and may store this data on servers located overseas or managed by third parties. To protect your personal data when we transfer it, we will put appropriate safeguards in place.

For individuals in the European Union (EU), this means that your personal data will be transferred outside the EU. We will only transfer EU personal data to countries that have been identified as providing adequate protection for EU data, or to a third party where we have approved transfer mechanisms in place, such as a Data Processing Agreement or appropriate data protection measures.

For more information about how the third parties mentioned above handle personal information (which may include your User Information and Usage Data), we recommend visiting their websites and reading their privacy policies.

A Note on Affiliate Links

We may receive commission on sales of products and services that are listed on our Platforms through affiliate marketing links. These links do not affect the editorial content on our Platforms. When you click on an affiliate link, a cookie is placed to optimize the affiliate program. We may also share some Usage Data with our affiliate partners.

Anonymity of cases/images

It is required by our terms of use that all patient cases uploaded to any of our platforms by users are de-identified, meaning that the identity of the patients referred to in the case (e.g. medical images and notes) is not identifiable. This applies to all images uploaded to any platform, including but not limited to cases (public, unlisted, or draft), slides, diagrams, and blog posts. If you believe that you or someone else can be identified from a case on our platforms, please contact us at privacy@osteosynthesis.org immediately.

There is certain information that should not appear on any patient cases uploaded to our platforms, based on HIPAA guidelines. This includes but is not limited to:

  • Name
  • Initials
  • Date of birth
  • Address (full or partial postal code)
  • Phone numbers or contact information
  • Email addresses
  • Unique identifying numbers (e.g. UR, MRN, HID, etc.)
  • Vehicle identifiers
  • Medical device identifiers (e.g. serial numbers)
  • Web or internet protocol addresses containing any link to the patient
  • Biometric data
  • Facial photographs or similar images
  • Names of relatives
  • Date of the study

Additionally, if a case is unique in a way that could lead to the identification of an individual from the images alone, it should not be uploaded. This means that cases that have received media attention or show rare symptoms are usually not appropriate for upload. The text accompanying the images should also not contain identifying information or unnecessary details that could help identify a patient.

Please note that our privacy policy does not override the policies of institutions, and users should ensure that they are using images within their local guidelines. We take patient privacy very seriously, and failing to follow these rules is a breach of our privacy policy and terms of use. If you upload a case with patient information or that could reasonably be used to identify the identity of a patient, it will be edited to deleted by an administrator without warning.

Our commitment to data security

We have implemented security measures to protect the personal information we collect online. These measures include physical, electronic, and managerial procedures to prevent unauthorized access, maintain data accuracy, and ensure the correct use of information.

Online tracking by Us and Third Parties

We do not alter our data collection practices based on the Do Not Track setting in your web browser. This setting will not prevent us from collecting Usage Data or allowing other providers to do so.
